I haven’t done a new install in a very long time, so I don’t recall exactly what happens. My sources.list got modernized some time back during an update. I also don’t use synaptic, so I can’t speak to exactly what it uses, nor how. The OP didn’t say he couldn’t update, only that there was no /etc/apt/sources.list, which isn’t necessarily a disaster. I also have no idea what settings the OP checked or didn’t check during installation, but his is the only report I’ve ever heard of there being no sources.list at all.
